Herren, has transformed his background in functional ceramics into a new line of large sculptural works that reference his background as a potter without being bound to the traditions of functionality. Herren has taken time-honored ceramic techniques & pushed them into the realm of the abstract, expertly combining wheel-thrown & hand-built shapes. Using a metallic glaze and layering over it with bright colored paints, & then sanding through to show the layers underneath give them the look of used industrial objects that allude so some distant and mysterious function. These monumental size works are heavy in presence yet light in mood, a very pleasing contradiction.
